NEXT FOUR YEARS. The next term of council will be important for both Sydenham and the City. The current municipal council has deferred a significant amount of important work to the next council, including the new Official Plan and Integrated Mobility Plan, the City's 10-year Housing and Homelessness Plan, The Student Housing Strategy and the Natural Heritage Study.

YOUR VOTE will enable me to ensure that these plans, strategies and studies meaningfully guide Council's decisions and lead to tangible results.

URBAN PLANNER: I have been a practising professional planner for more than 25 years, working with neighbourhood associations, resident groups, non-profit organizations, all three levels of government, and international organizations on a wide range of issues.

​

YOUR VOTE will allow me to bring my skills, expertise, and knowledge to the unique challenges facing the next council as it considers and approves some of our city’s most important long-term plans and urban development strategies.

 

PUBLIC INTEREST: I have dedicated my life to serving the public interest. My actions are guided by principles of fairness, integrity, and accountability.

YOUR VOTE will bring to Council a representative who respects, honours, and upholds the Code of Conduct for Municipal Elected Officials.

LOCAL GOVERNMENT:  I have been appointed to numerous committees and task forces by the City of Kingston and other municipalities. I have also advocated for my neighbours at Committee of Adjustment hearings and served as an expert witness for resident associations. I have also collaborated productively with municipal staff, environmental consultants, property owners, and developers to help shape effective policies and strategies.

YOUR VOTE will return a councillor with a deep understanding of local government operations—and the experience to get things done.

LOCAL KNOWLEDGE: I have been a resident of Sydenham District for more than half my life. During that time, I have developed an extensive understanding of the district and its residents. I have listened to my neighbours, stayed actively involved in local issues, attended public hearings, participated in community forums and planning meetings, and supported cultural events.

YOUR VOTE will enable me to advocate effectively for Sydenham District with informed knowledge, practical experience, and a strong commitment to its residents.

UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR: For more than 25 years as Professor of Urban and Regional Planning at Queen’s University, I have been engaged in Kingston’s civic life. Through teaching and mentoring, applied research, public service, community presentations, and partnerships with municipal agencies, non-profits, and community groups, I have helped address local issues including planning, housing, brownfields, ward boundaries, and environmental management. My academic career has combined scholarship with practical community service, strengthened local decision-making, and helped prepare future civic leaders.

YOUR VOTE will enable me to bring this experience to Council and contribute thoughtful, informed, and constructive perspectives to municipal debates.

​

QUEEN'S UNIVERSITY: In addition to my appointment as an Associate Professor of Urban and Regional Planning, I have also held a number of administrative positions including Associate Department Head and Acting Director. I have worked closely with campus planners and the Queen’s community on campus planning and relations with surrounding neighbourhoods.

​

YOUR VOTE will enable me to draw on my knowledge and understanding of Queen’s University to engage more effectively on important issues, including the Student Housing Strategy.

​

ENVIRONMENT: I am committed to protecting and restoring our natural environment. I was appointed to the City of Kingston’s Brownfields Task Force which developed the Community Improvement Plan needed to guide the redevelopment of contaminated properties, including Block D and the Davis Tannery. I also secured federal government funding to assist the Cataraqui Conservation Authority with important environmental planning initiatives.

YOUR VOTE will enable me to bring this experience and commitment to Council in support of a healthier, more sustainable Kingston.

​

PARTNERSHIPS: The City of Kingston cannot address many key issues—such as climate change, affordable housing, and economic development—on its own. We need effective partnerships with all levels of government, non-governmental organizations, and community stakeholders. I have spent years building and strengthening these relationships. 

 

YOUR VOTE will enable me to draw on this experience to forge the strategic partnerships needed to deliver meaningful results for Kingston.

  

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT: Our nation is currently facing a trade war with its largest trading partner, and Kingston has responded by establishing a working group to address the impact of tariffs on the local economy. At the federal level, efforts include diversifying Canada’s trade and economic partnerships. For many years, I have worked with Chinese Government to organize visits by Chinese government officials to Kingston and key regional sites such as the wollastonite mine near Seeley’s Bay.  In addition, I have also provided legal advice to Kingston businesses seeking to recruit skilled foreign workers.

YOUR VOTE will bring to Council a representative with international experience and the knowledge to help Kingston navigate economic uncertainty, strengthen global partnerships, and support local businesses.

​

INCLUSIVE COMMUNITIES: I actively participate in organizations that celebrate and promote Kingston’s multiculturalism. In 2017, I received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Mabuhay Pilipino-Canada Association of Kingston for my “untiring effort in volunteering and generosity to the organization.”  

​

YOUR VOTE will enable me to continue building an inclusive, welcoming, and connected community where everyone feels valued and has the opportunity to participate.

​

NEWCOMERS/NEW RESIDENTS:  For more than ten years, I have used my license as an immigration consultant in good standing with the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants to help newcomers and their families settle in Kingston and advise local businesses that hire foreign workers. This experience has given me practical insight into immigration, housing, employment, settlement services, and economic development.

 

IF ELECTED, I will use that knowledge to support inclusive growth and ensure newcomers’ needs and contributions are reflected in municipal decisions.
